For those of you that still frequent it, this is essentially news released today (20121026) that highlights the plight of those trapped in the embassy in Libya on Sept. 11, 2012. Allegedly CIA personnel were told to stand down and not leave to help Amb. Stevens. Luckily (or rather sadly, as will be explained later), these CIA personnel ignored the orders and left to go help the Ambassador. After heavy fighting for roughly 4 hours, a small contingent of US support troops left for the Ambassador's location, including ex-Navy SEALs. Once they arrived, a firefight ensued, and the US personnel were forced to bunker down and call for support. Now here is where it gets hazy: After the personnel on the ground realized that they needed support, they sent distress messages out to US comms stations. The messages were relayed to both Washington, D.C. and AFRICOM. the ground unit attempted to designate targets using a laser designator, implying that Air support (think AC130 gunships or armed Predator drones) was online, since you don't laze a target unless there is support already available. If this is true, then the problem lays in that the air support was told not to engage from higher ups (possibly AFRICOM general or POTUS). Supposedly, Special Operations Forces in Europe were moved to Italy and put on standby (Delta Force, anyone?), but they were not released to provide support. | |
